Money is the root of all evil

Nowadays, students work part time while studying… What is the reason for this? Why is money so important that they sometimes have to sacrifice their sleep, energy and even classes just to go to work? If you work for longer hours, it is more detrimental towards your studies. Working students usually feel that their studies suffered as a result of their employment. Producing poor assignments, not having enough time to study for tests, falling asleep during class hours, missing out social events etc. So why? Why do students put their studies and future in jeopardy…..?

Why do students need the money?

  1. To buy clothes, handphones, shoes, accessories, birthday presents
  2.  to go out with friends to movies, clubbing, dinner
  3. to pay off debts, loans etc
  4. to be independent

I have friends who work and planning to go out with them takes alot of effort due to their work schedules. Managing work and education is not easy. But, working while studying does give some benefits.

Working part-time can be a fulfilling experience for students who are ready to take on additional commitments and responsibilities as well as enjoying the rewards of money. Students should always assess the studying workloads to ensure that their job does not interfere with their studying life.

In Singapore, education and money plays a huge role in everyone’s life. That is why students are working towards that so that have a fruitful and prosperous future ahead of them.

So what do you think? Should students work while studying? OR finish studying, then work? I cant decide.. Can you…?

Honestly, I can’t decide either because both of them are important in Singapore. In my perspective, when a person is taking on a task that is important, he or she should be committed to it and strive for the best. So if the person is able to balance both working and school with excellent performance, then he or she shouldn’t be focusing only on one task. However, if the person is facing difficulty handling both at the same time, then he or she should start prioritise what is more important because the person shouldn’t risk losing something really important for his or her future for something temporary.

Being one of those who had to slog like hell to earn enough for myself, I’d love to be able to finish studying then work really. It is a torture to have to juggle studies, work and play, especially during the peak period where exams and assignments pile sky high. But well, working is a good way to make us appreciate our free time and also gain experience about the working world, which is an entirely different from planet mugging like crazy.

Money is not everything, but you can’t do without money. Cliche it might sound, but speaking from my own experience, it’s true. Students nowadays are laden with debts even before they are officially out working. They socialise more often than before and focus more often on material wants more than needs. When the money from parents are not enough to fulfill the basic needs, they resort to working part time.
Given a choice, I’d want to work only I’ve finish studying but based on the fact of that “money not enough”, life is never good to you.
Contradicting it may sound, we study for a better future, for a better paying career. But the studies often landed us with tonnes of debts to be cleared with the better salary we hope to be rewarded with.
